The First Generation Mentorship Program prepares CBU’s first-gen students to transition from college to career successfully. This two-semester program (October – April) matches first-generation students with alumni and other professionals who are currently employed in the students’ fields of study/career interest areas, providing an opportunity to engage in networking and professional development. Students can discuss any concerns or challenges they face while gaining support, direction, and industry connections from their mentor.

Applications to participate open at the beginning of every fall semester, with Career Services matching students and mentors by early October.

Mentors and mentees are expected to meet remotely by video chat or phone call 6-9 times per academic year (a minimum of three times per semester). Examples of discussion prompts will be provided monthly by email to both mentors and mentees. Participants may also choose to meet in person in a public setting, such as on campus at CBU, the mentor’s workplace, or coffee shops, among other locations.

Mentees will attend a minimum of 4 professional development programs or individualized career counseling appointments with Career Services per year (at least two per semester). Students will be informed regarding which programs are eligible for their participation requirement.
