November 27, 2023

Colleagues,

I am writing to update you on the retrenchment process. On November 16, the retrenchment committee submitted to me its report of a coordinated program of academic and non-academic services to help relieve the state of exigency. I must praise all of the members of the committee for the work that went into this report.

The committee has not yet given recommendations that total the Board mandate of a $4 million reduction in salaries, wages and benefits less the reductions already made in staff and administrative compensation. Because I want this process to be as collaborative as possible, I met with the retrenchment committee on November 21 and requested that they continue their work. After convening twice, they have instead asked that I work with the Deans on further recommendations. These additional discussions necessitate an extension of the timeline for the remainder of the process.

During the Community Town Hall on September 28, I stated that I wanted to notify faculty of non-renewals by November 30. I am now pushing that date back by just over a week to allow for this additional collaboration. Notifications of non-renewal will be made at the end of next week.

Please know that I recognize the impact this process has had on our campus community. In light of these challenges, I want to remind everyone that our employee assistance program provides valuable resources to help prioritize mental well-being during these times.

Again, I pray for the peace of God that surpasses all understanding to guard our hearts during this time.

Together and by association,
