Ongoing CGWS Research Projects

Capital Investment, Technology, and the Feminization of Manufacturing Employment in the United States and Colombia

This project examines the relationship between the feminization of manufacturing employment and technology-related capital investment (machinery, transport equipment, computing equipment, and similar assets). Using panel data techniques, including instrumental variables and dynamic panel estimators, the project analyzes how employment composition responds to these changes over time. One paper from this research was published in the Latin American Journal of Trade Policy (2023), a related paper was presented at the 2nd Colombian Congress of Labor Studies (2025), and additional papers are in progress.

Labor Market and Wellbeing Outcomes among Boys and Men in Tennessee and Colombia

This research combines quantitative and qualitative methods to examine why certain groups of men face challenges in the labor market as well as in emotional and physical wellbeing. The project is interdisciplinary, drawing on multiple academic fields to study this comparatively recent trend in the United States and other industrialized countries, with a comparative focus on Memphis and the Mid-South and on Colombia. Preliminary findings were previewed in a 2023 presentation at CBU’s Preview Fair.
